The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art welcomes an exhibition of paintings
from Ukrainian/Chicago artist, Anatole Kolomayets. Born in the Poltava region of
Ukraine, Kolomayets (b.1927) relocated to Chicago upon graduation from the Royal
Academy of Arts in Liege, Belgium, 1954. He has since firmly established himself as an
artist in Chicago within the international community. His work has been shown in
numerous solo and group exhibitions, and he was one of the founders of the Ukrainian
Artists’ Group “Monolith”, active in Chicago 1954-1958. Kolomayets is foremost a
colorist, though traces of artistic influence from his background of travel and education
abroad are apparent in the diverse combination of styles within which he works. This
exhibition will focus on a selection of works from the last two decades.
Intuitively selecting stylistic traces from both his Ukrainian heritage and his artistic
training in Europe, Kolomayets has forged a distinct aesthetic that harmoniously blends
tradition, experience, and innovation. Kolomayets’ recent paintings are bold displays of
color and shape, both figurative and abstract. Though neither jarring nor aggressive,
there is an emotional potency that draws from the rich use of color and heavy, curving
lines. Layers of paint, and intentional textures lend intimacy to the otherwise imposing
nature of his work. Kolomayets’ intensity as an artist is apparent in the rapt lens he
provides his subjects, allowing little distraction by secondary details.
