The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art invites you to an exhibition of Subconscious Eye. Artists in this exhibition include Chicago artists: John A. Kurtz, Bruce Thorn and Paul Lamantia.

Subconscious Eye brings together the work of three artists who penetrate the surface of everyday experience in order to immerse themselves in realms beyond consciousness. Their engagement with this territory varies immensely as the sources and aims of their art rarely overlap with one another. Yet there is a serendipitous harmony in this ensemble. Each pushes his form and subject matter to aesthetic extremes in order to convey the overwhelming intensity of that trip to the void. -Robert Cozzolino, Senior Curator and Curator of Modern Art Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia

Friday, April 5th a record crowd of over 200 attendees witnessed the opening of a vibrant, dynamic, exhilarating exhibit by three of Chicago’s prominent artists, John A, Kurtz, Paul Lamantia, and Bruce Thorn.
The Subconscious Eye exhibit brings together the work of three artists who penetrate the surface of everyday experience in order to immerse themselves into the realm beyond consciousness.
Each of them pushes his form and subject matter to the extremes in order to convey an overwhelming intense trip into a void. Each work is an assault on the senses that intellect and emotion wrestle to balance.
The art of these three dynamic artists carries an uncanny sense of a hidden universe that stretches out just beyond a transparent veil in our environment.
It is an exhibit that entices and calls for return visits, each one opening your senses to new interpretations. – Orysia Cardoso, UIMA President

Opening Reception: Friday, June 7, 6-9 pm

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is proud to present a solo exhibition of one of Chicago’s great abstractionists, painter and sculptor Thomas Kapsalis.
The focus of this exhibition is Kapsalis’s works from 1990-2013, and features works in various media, such as paintings, sculptures in metal, wood, and recycled materials. Many of the works were created in the past decade, and have never been publicly exhibited.

Kapsalis’s combinations of colors and shapes are masterfully composed, making his work visually very attractive. But there is more in Kapsalis’s work than geometric abstraction - the titles of the works will open the door to another dimension of his works. They reveal something about the artist and his observations of everyday life, sometime intellectual, sometime with humor, but always with perspective of an American Artist.

A prisoner of war in Germany, captured during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, Kapsalis returned to the United States, and continued his pursuit of art-making. He has been an important artist and educator since the late ’40s, when he graduated from the School of the Art Institute. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute since 1954. Kapsalis’s work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows, and he received many prestigious prizes and awards.

Reception October 12, 6-9pm

When the average person enters a gallery or walks into a museum or even discovers a large scale sculpture while on a daily commute, their immediate reaction is one of wonder, awe, inspiration and the ever present “how did this get here.” The real answer to this question was formed long before the process of sizing up sculpture ever started. This exhibition will attempt to shed some light on how a thought becomes a reality, and expose some of the steps artists take to get there.

The Exhibition will be closely related to the The 23rd International Sculpture Conference (October 4-6) in Chicago, and will feature 5 Chicago artists. On display will be the process of creating large scale sculptures, from their conception in drawings, to becoming models, and then the actual finished pieces. It will be curated by Terrence Karpowicz, a member of The Chicago Sculpture International.

Artists in this exhibition: Eric Gushee, Jill King, Dean Langworthy, Dusty Folwarczny, Elena Rakochy.

This exhibition is also part of:

Chicago, IL - The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art invites you to the exhibit of three artists who have in common the temperament of the explorer, but they work in dramatically different ways. Olivia Petrides travels the earth’s northern latitudes and paints the natural phenomena that she sees there. Lisa Sambor explores form with her hands, often finding the new by accident and transforming her discoveries into three-dimensional pattern pieces. Using a unique method that he created through trial and error, Dennis Lee Mitchell makes dark smoke patterns on paper that recall forms in nature.

Exhibit Dates: June 16 – August 5, 2012

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art invites you to the exhibit of the collection of Dr. Achilles and Vera Chreptowsky. Since the 1950’s, Achilles and Vera accumulated a large personal collection of modern and contemporary artwork. They were also instrumental in establishing the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago as a venue for artistic and other cultural activities.

The Chreptowsky collection will showcase a selection of approximately 40 pieces – a diversity of work and styles from the latter half of the twentieth century, illustrating artistic trends current of the time.

This exhibition will not only celebrate and pay tribute to these two collectors, but also to the artists themselves. Included in this exhibition are works by Alexander Archipenko, Ihor Dmytruk, Alexis Gritchenko, Liuboslav Hutsaliuk, Jacques Hnizdovsky, Alexander Hunenko, Alexandra Kochman, Peter Kolisnyk, Ron Kostyniuk, Gregor Kruk, Konstantin Milonadis, Jerzy Nowosielski, Aka Pereyma, Jurij Solovij, Jurij Strutynsky, Mychajlo Urban and others.

At 7:00 pm, in the Permanent Collection gallery, the UIMA will pay tribute to the late sculptor and co-founder of the Institute, Konstantin Milonadis (1926-2012).

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art presents art of Michiko Itatani, Claire Wolf Krantz and Susan Sensemann, three contemporary Chicago artists exhibiting recent paintings and drawings.

Michiko Itatani’s site-specific painting/installation “Cosmic Wanderlust” is one of her personal “fictions” dealing with the human desire to reach out into the mental and physical space beyond our grasp. It will be installed on the curved wall of the UIMA gallery where she exhibited her “Untitled” installation in 1981. Four Sumi-ink drawings will also be shown.

Claire Wolf Krantz’s recent acrylic paintings on paper depict symmetrical forms that make psychological and emotional associations with the kind of art and craft objects that she has collected for many years from various travels—clay objects, jewelry from Tibet, masks from Bali and South Africa, shadow puppets from Java, and various fiber art and weaving.

Oscillating fields of dots and marks in paintings and drawings by Susan Sensemann provide a retinal experience through which the viewer associates directly with the meditative act of making forms that resemble lace, cells, or stars. The repetitive work of the hand on paper, canvas, and aluminum reveals equanimity and a close-focus reading of detail.
